![]() ![]() The world is still an awfully harsh place to those who step out of line or who cannot enter into prescribed ways of thinking and feeling.Īnna Karenina and War and Peace are often described as very different novels, and that is true. ![]() And the targets and outward forms of social disapproval may be different now to what they were then, but they nevertheless exist. Its characters are among the most memorable ever created. The world it depicts and dissects remains fascinating in itself. Anna Karenina is a novel that beguiles and intrigues. What can it possiby have to say to us now? ![]() After all, it’s a novel written originally in Russian in the nineteenth century by an aristocrat about people falling in and out of love, when moral conventions and society’s strictures were different to what they are today, when divorce was rare and adultery could lead to social annihilation. It is entirely legitimate to ask ourselves why we should bother to read Anna Karenina. It is beautifully presented by Alma Classics, and includes an interesting preface and translators’ note, informative notes to the text and useful extra material on Tolstoy’s life and works. ![]() This is a wonderful new translation of Tolstoy’s great novel that should enthrall a new generation of readers. ![]() ![]() ![]() The men had insisted on speed, size and style to provide the needed protection against weather and the precious privacy denied on the trail. She recalled how quickly and efficiently the cabins had been constructed. Only the varying colors of curtains fluttering in and out of open windows or a rugged work bench attached to the side wall of certain cabins marked minute differences to the naked eye. The bright sun beamed down on the fortress yard, which was cluttered by many one-room cabins, each an exact replica of the ones surrounding it. The fragrant scents of verdant nature and late spring flowers floated in the balmy air. Alisha opened the door to their small, one-room cabin and stepped outside to absorb the warmth of the sunlight. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() As I watched scores of newcomers use Keras in unexpected, powerful ways, I came to care deeply about the accessibility and democratization of AI. But throughout 20, tens of thousands of new people entered the field of deep learning many of them picked up Keras because it was-and still is-the easiest framework to get started with. I had been doing research in machine learning for several years, and had built Keras to help me with my own experiments. When I released the first version of the Keras deep-learning framework in March 2015, the democratization of AI wasn’t what I had in mind. For deep learning to reach its full potential, we need to radically democratize it. But in order to begin deploying deep-learning technology to every problem that it could solve, we need to make it accessible to as many people as possible, including nonexperts-people who aren’t researchers or graduate students. ![]() The consequences of this sudden progress extend to almost every industry. In a mere five years, we’ve gone from near-unusable image recognition and speech transcription, to superhuman performance on these tasks. If you’ve picked up this book, you’re probably aware of the extraordinary progress that deep learning has represented for the field of artificial intelligence in the recent past. ![]() ![]() ![]() Brimming with anecdote and encouragement, and written in a clear, engaging style, Montessori from the Start is a practical and useful guide to raising calm, capable, and confident children. The series consist of four books, but I liked the first volume the best. The setting is the fictional kingdom of Tortall and the time is not clear, but it hints in many ways of medieval times. She makes many friends, including Prince Jonathan whose knight she becomes, and George, the king of thieves. Also, the main character Alanna is certainly a role model in some aspects for girls, though not so much in relationships I might add.Īlanna of Trebold is the man character of this fantasy series, a girl who wants to be a boy and disguises herself as one (‘Alan’)in order to train as a knight. ![]() That has become quite mainstream after Harry Potter, but that wasn’t the case in the 1980’s so it must have been quite novel and revolutionary at the time. Many elements that we now consider quit normal or even cliché are present, like magic. That makes it a bit of a classic and I can see why. ![]() The Song of the Lioness series) (four volumes*) is an ‘oldie’, the first volume of this series was published in 1983. ![]() ![]() ![]() Hopefully, the author will have a sequel (as she has indicated there will be more graphic novels for Bloodraven as well). ![]() The main focus of "Wizard" remains the torture. When he is rescued by Escalon, their brief affair is steamy but leaves a reader hanging because it is over so quickly. more hers being tortured (one resulting in a particularly gruesome death). Here, the protagonist Ferris is subjected to brutal rape/torture and has to witness ot. It may be because there is also a full-length novel companion to Bloodraven that the impact of horrors done to the main character are tempered by his evolving relationship with Bloodraven. My main issue with the story was the graphic torture (both visually and written). Warrior Ferris is captured and the enemy take sadistic pleasure trying to break him. ![]() The story opens with the aftermath of a battle between two nations. Although I did like it, it was not as good as her other graphic novel "Bloodraven." This is set in the same world, but takes place many years earlier with different characters. Review 1: This is a combination graphic novel with a novelette (written text) to expand the story. ![]() ![]() ![]() Until she receives the call that sends her racing back to Barry’s Bay and into the orbit of Sam Florek-the man she never thought she’d have to live without. Six summers to fall in love. ![]() ![]() ![]() I like how the story is essentially an allusion for real events, and the little splash of ghosts thrown in as well. I could see this being “too much” for some readers, but I love description when it’s paired with a good story (and it’s not just one hundred pages describing how the characters look). The level of how descriptive her writing is made me feel like I was there with the characters. It almost sounded like the perfection my English teachers in high school wanted us to achieve, but never could. Her tone was somewhat professional, yet it worked so well within this novel. Her descriptions and tone in her writing was something that just clicked with me. Rebecca McNutt’s novel Bittersweet Symphony was an addicting read for me. That cannot be understated – I love helping other Canadian authors out. This book was written in Nova Scotia, and as a Canadian I AM SO HAPPY I AM READING A CANADIAN BOOK. ![]() ![]() ![]() KENT Solid and steady is what our girl needs.
